THE MUMMY
The sands will rise. The heavens will part. The power will be unleashed

Big special effects film that was the surprise hit of summer 1999.
Ancient Egyptian priest, Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) is sentenced to eternal damnation in 1719BC, his undead mummified body trapped in the earth until a group of explorers stumble on his grave in 1925 and inadvertently release him.  His mummy begins terrorising the country and a small group of arachaeologists, led by Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah) and helped by dashing explorer, Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) must try and destroy his vengeful spirit.
Simplified, but you get the drift.  The Mummy is utter nonsense, but nevertheless a good laugh and entertaining in it’s own hokum way.  You can spot practically every second of the plot, but there is a fresh approach to it that cuts the film above the rest of the genre.
For one, the cast play it for the most part tongue in cheek, which takes any expectation away and hence  lets you relax into enjoying the film.  Fraser and Hannah are particularly good at this, and shine as a result, though Weisz is not far behind.
The real plus for the film is the special effects- they really are quite spectacular and add the icing to the cake- without them, it would have been a sight duller.  Some great sand-demons and swirly things- very nice.
A good romp, very much in the style of an old adventure film, but brought smack up to date with some great effects- well worth the watch. DJY
